Welcome to the sixth edition of The MAGAZINE

MAGAZINE – the newsletter of ICOMAM, the International Committee of Museums of Arms and Military History, published to inform members of its activities and publicize these to the wider world. Technology, especially computers and the internet, is moving
forward at such a pace today that it is hard for many of us to keep up with. It is difficult to believe how quickly the new social media have become embedded in so many areas of our lives, including museums. For this edition of the ICOMAM Magazine, our sixth, we have featured the ways that different museums are using both older, and newer, technologies, from the now more traditional email to Twitter and Facebook. Among a range of news, articles and publications, we also have a reminder of this year’s ICOMAM conference in Graz – details are included. Our next edition will be in October 2011

Welcome to the fifth edition of The MAGAZINE

Welcome to the fifth edition of MAGAZINE – the newsletter of ICOMAM, the International Committee of Museums of Arms and Military History, published to inform members of its activities and publicize these to the wider world. For our fifth edition of the ICOMAM Magazine we asked colleagues to nominate objects which were important to them or their institutions. The variety of responses shows how wide the interests of our members are – we hope you enjoy reading about them. Among a range of news, articles and publications, we also have a reminder of this summer’s conference in Dublin and a taster for ICOMAMs conference next year in Graz – the call for papers is included. Our next edition will be in April 2011 and we are planning to include features on museums and new technologies – from Twitter and Facebook to the now traditional website and database.

Welcome to the fourth edition of The MAGAZINE

Welcome to the fourth issue of the Magazine. Readers probably don’t need to be reminded that this year’s meeting takes place in Dublin and will deal with education in armies and in military museums. This got us to think about how
education, training and the passing on of skills is something which reflects all through our subject, from how young curators pick up their skills and experiences, the joy of reading and using textbooks and catalogues to how young princes are trained in the arts of war, almost straight out of the nursery. In addition we have a number of more general themes which we hope will intrigue, entertain and educate you. That is what the Magazine is for - to reflect the experiences of our members and disseminate their experiences.

Welcome to the third edition of The MAGAZINE

Welcome to the third edition of MAGAZINE – the newsletter of ICOMAM, the International Committee of Museums of Arms and Military History, published to inform members of its activities and publicize these to the wider world.

It has been a quiet few months since the last MAGAZINE, largely, we suspect, the result of the present global economic situation. Free, and freely available, online resources like this are, we hope, even more useful in such situations. However our member museums continue to acquire important new works, mount significant exhibitions and host events as detailed in this issue.

As ever we welcome feedback and comments and hope that you will be inspired to contribute to the next issue in April 2010

Welcome to the second edition of The MAGAZINE

The newsletter of ICOMAM, the International Committee of Museums of Arms and Military History, published to inform members of its activities and publicize these to the wider world. Since our first issue ICOMAM has held its conference in Rio de Janeiro where we were in the very capable hands of Admiral Armando Bittencourt. He and his staff looked after us in superb style enabling us to see their wonderful collections, meet our South American colleagues and experience Brazil’s legendary hospitality. We have included a short photo essay of the conference here.

As in the first issue we have a mixture of material from news and exhibitions to articles on objects and displays. As we stated before we hope to provide a forum for the wider field of arms, armour and military studies – to share ideas and experiences and spread information about what worked and what did not. We hope you find it useful and informative.

We welcome feedback and comments and hope that you will be inspired to contribute to the next issue in September 2009.

Welcome to the first edition of ICOMAM’s MAGAZINE.

MAGAZINE was born from the desire of ICOMAM, the International Committee of Museums of Arms and Military History, to inform members of its activities and publicize these to the wider world. We plan to publish twice a year – in Spring and Autumn. Each edition will carry news items relating to our museums and information about exhibitions, conferences, people, museum developments and new acquisitions; articles about wider issues such as objects, history of collections, conservation; and reviews of exhibitions, museums, and books.

We would also like to cover new technologies and developments in museums – in fact everything and anything about our subject. We hope it will provide a forum for the wider field of arms, armour and military studies - to share ideas and experiences and spread information about what worked and what did not. We hope you find it useful and informative.

We welcome feedback and comments and hope that this issue will inspire you to contribute to the next.
